Yannis Malegiannakis - the year of three winters

Elika Gallery presents the solo show of Yannis Malegiannakis, The Year of Three Winters.

Elika Gallery presents  the first solo exhibition of Yannis Malegiannakis titled The Year of Three Winters.

The painting of Malegiannakis is, in a way, depicts the gaze of the painter – observer into the space. A space, not so tangible and real, but one that is being implied, dissolved and emerges through the personal view. His paintings don’t have as an aim the representation or the abstraction, but the meditative turn of the sight into the interior of the image that is presented in front of us. Every image carries its own visual meaning and through the personal filter of each one, it enlightens one’s unique relation with it.

The works are often created in situ, like a contemporary topography of interior spaces. Thus, the distance between the painter and the object is as vital as the painter and the object themselves. Through the exploration of the media (oil or charcoal), Malegiannakis is invited to portray this “gap” that almost breaths, exists and defines or repositions the limits of the real.

Yannis Malegiannakis was born in Athens in 1977. In 2007 he graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Athens and in 2010 he concluded his MA in Athens. At the time he lives and works in Berlin while participating at the UDK (University of Arts) with professor Ms. Leiko Ikemura. He has been awarded with the Spyropoulos Award and has received scholarships from the Academy of Athens and IKY.
